JS Ink Note Privacy Statement
Last updated: 19 October 2026
Who we are
JS Ink Note is a product of JS Insights Ltd, United Kingdom. This statement explains how this app handles your PDF documents, handwriting, signatures, recordings, purchases and advertising choices. For privacy questions, contact contact@jsinsights.co.uk.
Optional subtitles
Generate Subtitles runs only after recording and only when you choose it. On Apple devices, the app requests Speech Recognition permission and requires on-device recognition; it does not fall back to an online transcription service. If local recognition is unavailable, you can add subtitles manually. Original and edited transcripts are saved with each recording and, on Apple devices, may sync with your notebook when iCloud is enabled. Exported subtitles go only to the destinations you select. The Windows and Android options are described below.
On Windows, you choose how subtitles are made: Whisper on this PC, Windows speech recognition, or your own AI provider. Whisper's speech model is downloaded once from Hugging Face (the ggerganov/whisper.cpp repository) only when you choose a model size on the Subtitle recognition page, in Settings or when you first generate subtitles; nothing is downloaded before you choose. That request fetches only the model file, so Hugging Face receives ordinary connection information such as your IP address, but no recording, notebook or account detail. The file is checked against a fixed SHA-256 fingerprint and stored in your Windows user's local app data folder, where Settings shows the space it uses and lets you delete it. After that, Whisper and Windows speech recognition transcribe your recordings on the PC, without an internet connection, and the audio is not uploaded. With your own AI provider, the selected recording's voice is sent to that provider only when you choose it.
Your notebooks and recordings
PDFs, editable ink, pasted images and PDF clippings, notebook covers, page layouts, recording timelines, audio and camera video are stored on your device by default. No JS Insights account is needed to use local notebooks. JS Insights does not receive the contents of your notebooks through an app-operated server and does not use them for advertising or AI training. The app does not include a separate analytics or crash-reporting service operated by JS Insights.
Optional AI assistance
AI Assistant is optional. When you review the selected text and choose Send Using My API Account, the app sends your task and selected PDF text, pasted reference material or saved transcripts directly to the AI endpoint you chose, using your own API key. The provider processes this information under its own terms, retention rules and privacy policy, and may charge your account. JS Insights does not supply or pay for tokens and does not route these requests through a company server. On Apple devices, keys stay in this device's Keychain and are excluded from notebooks and iCloud sync. Windows and Android key storage is described in their sections below. Connection preferences stay on this device. Generated and edited AI notes are saved in the notebook and, on Apple devices, may sync when you enable iCloud. You can instead copy/share material and use your own chat website; opening a website alone does not automatically send a model request. Remove API connections in AI Connections. Also revoke credentials with the provider when needed. Original documents and transcripts are not overwritten by AI results.
Reading aloud, voices and text recognition
On Apple devices, Read Aloud with Apple's voices and Recognise Text run on this device; no document text is uploaded, and recognised text is saved only in the notebook. On Windows, the installed Windows voices and Windows text recognition also run on the PC. Android voice and text-recognition behaviour is described below. If you choose My AI voice, each sentence to be read is sent with your own key to the speech service of the AI connection you chose, which may charge your account. The returned audio is kept in this device's cache. While it is there, reading the same sentence again with the same connection, model, voice and speed uses the saved audio instead of a new request; a change to any of these, or a cleared cache, means a new request. Test Connection in AI Connections sends one short fixed sentence. Narrated recordings and exports are made on this device.
Local note search
Search Pages & Recordings reads notebook titles, selectable PDF text, saved edited transcripts and edited AI notes on your device. Its text index is kept in memory while the search view is open, is not uploaded to a JS Insights server or advertising SDK, and is not placed in a public system search index. Selecting a transcript result opens that recording at the matching time. This version does not automatically recognise handwriting or scanned-page text for search.
Teaching display and publishing
When you start Teaching Display, the selected PDF page or crop and live ink appear on a connected external display. This is rendered from the document, not captured from the whole screen; toolbars, other windows and notes outside the selected crop are excluded. Stop Presentation when you no longer want to show it. Publish / Share lets you save exported videos and open a platform's upload page using your own account. This version does not automatically publish to YouTube, bilibili or another platform. Files you share or upload are then handled under the destination's terms and privacy settings.
Camera and microphone
The app asks for microphone or camera permission when you choose a feature that needs it. Audio and video become part of the page recording you create. Turn the camera off when you do not want to record a presenter. You can revoke permissions in your device's privacy settings. Background removal, blur, virtual backgrounds, beauty and low-light adjustments are processed on your device; camera frames are not sent to an AI service. These effects do not identify who you are.
Optional iCloud sync
On Apple devices, when you enable iCloud sync, notebook documents, ink and recording metadata are copied to your private Apple iCloud Documents container and can sync with devices using the same Apple Account. Audio and camera video sync are off by default and require a separate choice. JS Insights does not have server-side access to your private iCloud documents. Apple processes cloud data and backups under its own terms and privacy policy. Turning sync off does not by itself delete existing cloud or backup copies.
Windows
The Windows edition stores notebooks, recordings and settings on your PC. API keys for your AI connections are stored separately from notebooks and protected using Windows data protection for your Windows user account. They are not included in exported notebook backups. Optional requests to your own AI provider and subtitle-model downloads are described above. The Windows edition does not show advertising.
Android
On Android phones and tablets, notebooks, ink, recordings and settings are kept in the app's private storage on the device; JS Insights has no server that receives them. Android's own backup and device-to-device transfer can copy the app's data, including notebooks, when you have turned them on. Whether a backup is made depends on your Android settings, your Google account and Google's storage limits, and Google handles those copies under its own terms. API keys for your AI connections are encrypted with the Android Keystore and always left out of Android backups and transfers; drawing-tablet pairing keys are kept in storage that Android does not back up. Read Aloud uses the text-to-speech engine installed on your device. Voices that the engine marks as needing the internet ("Needs internet") use that engine's online service, which may receive the text being read under the engine provider's own terms; voices without that mark can read offline. Recognise Text uses Google ML Kit on the device, and Generate Subtitles uses Android's on-device speech recognition. The microphone is used only while you record. The camera is used while you record with Pen + Voice + Camera and when you scan a drawing-tablet pairing QR code. The free Android edition shows Google AdMob banners on the library and settings screens (see Advertising), and Google Play handles Premium payments, restoration and refunds.
Drawing tablet connections
When you pair an iPhone, iPad or Android device as a drawing tablet with a Mac or Windows PC, the devices exchange the selected page background, ink, editing commands and connection information. The computer saves the notebook. Connections can use USB, local or peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, or, between an iPhone or iPad and a Mac, optional Bluetooth Low Energy. Bluetooth permission is requested only when you enable that connection method. Pairing uses a code and encrypted app connections; paired-device names and keys are stored locally. Unacknowledged ink is kept on the drawing device for retry. Use only devices you trust, and remove paired devices when you no longer want them to connect.
Advertising
The free iPhone, iPad and Android editions use Google AdMob on library and settings screens. Google and its advertising partners may process your IP address and approximate location, device or advertising identifiers where permitted, ad interactions, consent choices and diagnostic or performance data to deliver, measure and protect advertising. The app does not send your PDF, ink, signatures, microphone audio or camera video to the advertising SDK. Privacy choices are managed through Google's User Messaging Platform where required; use Advertising Privacy Options in Settings when available. Premium stops new ad requests. Data already processed by Google remains subject to Google's policies. The Mac and Windows editions do not use AdMob.
Purchases
On Apple devices, Apple processes Premium payments, purchase restoration and refunds. The app checks Apple-verified transaction and entitlement information to unlock Premium and handle revoked purchases. Google Play handles Premium payments, restoration and refunds for the Android edition. JS Insights does not receive your payment-card details through these store purchase flows.
When Premium is offered in the Microsoft Store edition, Microsoft Store processes the purchase. The app uses Microsoft Store product and licence information to determine whether Premium is available and unlocked, and keeps a Store-verified entitlement locally, protected for your Windows user account, for offline use. JS Insights does not receive your payment-card details through this flow. Purchase availability depends on the installed edition and the store listing.
The first three successful MP4 exports on this device have no required watermark. Subsequent free exports carry the JS Ink Note watermark; an active Premium entitlement removes it. On Apple devices, the successful-export count is stored in the Keychain and is not synced to iCloud. On Android, it is stored in local app preferences. On Windows, it is stored in a protected local file and a protected entry in your Windows user registry; that registry entry can remain after app removal. PDF and audio exports have no required watermark.
Exports and deletion
You control when notebooks and recordings are exported or shared. Editable .jsinkbackup files contain your PDF, handwriting, covers, timelines, subtitles, AI notes and retained versions. Audio and camera video are included only when you choose Include Audio & Video. Backups are not encrypted by this app and do not include API keys, pairing secrets or purchase information. Protect the file and share it only with your chosen recipients. The app sends the selected exported file to the destination you choose in the system share interface. Delete recordings or notebooks in the app to remove its active copies; on Apple devices, a deletion from an iCloud-synced library can propagate to your other devices. Separately remove files you exported, drawing-tablet pending edits, device backups and any copies kept by recipients. Removing the app may leave cloud data and backups, Apple Keychain pairing information, or the Windows export-counter registry entry described above. JS Insights cannot recover or delete copies that exist only on your devices or in your private cloud accounts.
Support and your rights
If you email us, we receive your email address, message and any attachments you choose to send. Send only information needed for your request. We use support correspondence to respond and maintain the service, and retain it only as needed for that purpose or legal obligations. Where applicable, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of personal data held by JS Insights, object to processing, or withdraw consent. Email contact@jsinsights.co.uk. You may also complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office or your local data protection authority. Apple, Google and Microsoft handle requests relating to data they process under their own policies.
Children and other people
Do not record or share other people's voices, faces or documents without the permissions needed for your situation. A parent or guardian should supervise children's use of recording, sharing and advertising choices. This app does not create a child profile or deliberately request a child's personal details.
Changes
An offline privacy statement is also available in the app. We will update this page when the app's data practices change; the date above identifies this website version. Our company website has separate notices for its website and other products.
